Caddyshack [Blu-ray] (1980)

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, 'Caddyshack' is a classic film comedy, packed with memorable scenes and funny lines that still get quoted both on and off golf courses. It's a coming-of-age story about young caddies, but once the talents of Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield (in his first film role), Ted Knight, and Bill Murray were in place and at work, the plot lost its importance. In fact, so did the script, as Ramis encouraged improvisation.

Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe) is in need of a scholarship if he wants to go to college rather than work at the local lumberyard. He caddies at Bushwood Country Club and is frequently given advice by Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), son of one of the co-founders and a talented golfer. Noonan tries to get in good with the other co-founder, Judge Smails (Ted Knight), but for every right step he makes, such as suggesting a better lie during a round ("Winter rules") and taking the blame for an accident, he makes decisions that earn Smails' wrath. The oddest move is substituting into a game against Smails with $40,000 riding on it.

Overall: Of all the great comedy and spoof films of the early 1980's "Caddyshack" is beyond a doubt one of the more memorable flicks of the period that will probably never die with time. Caddyshack features fine performances from Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, and of course, the gopher. This motion picture is replete with sight gags and one-liners that to this day are repeated by afficianados of clever satire. Caddyshack is one of those movies that you always go back to whenever you want a good laugh.

Overall: I have read many negative reviews, but I was still curious to see this movie. I am not a huge Burton fan , although I've enjoyed some of his earlier work. You have to hand to Disney; they really are treating this Blu-ray release like a million bucks, all of the actors did a great job. This is a good movie for the whole family. Having said all that if you were a fan of the original, this version will be much different from the animated one...but I still really enjoyed it.

This Week On Blu Ray - The Man with No Name Trilogy

'A Fistful of Dollars' - Clint Eastwood's legendary "Man With No Name" makes his powerful debut in this thrilling, action-packed "new breed of western" from the acclaimed director of The Good, The Bad And The Ugly and For A Few Dollars More. A mysterious gunman has just arrived in San Miguel, a grim, dusty border town where two rival bands of smugglers are terrorizing the impoverished citizens, the stranger soon receives offers of employment from each gang. But his loyalty cannot be bought; he accepts both jobs...and sets in motion a plan to destroy both jobs...and sets in motion a plan to destroy both groups of criminals, pitting one against the other in a series of brilliantly orchestrated set-ups, showdowns and deadly confrontations.

'For a Few Dollars More' - Eastwood is a keen-eyed, quick-witted bounty hunter on the bloody trail of Indio, the territory's most treacherous bandit. But his ruthless rival, Colonel Mortimer, is determined to bring Indio in first...dead or alive! Failing to capture their prey--or eliminate each other--the two are left with only one option: team up, or face certain death at the hands of Indio and his band of murderous outlaws.

'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' - By far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever mounted, The Good The Bad And The Ugly is an engrossing action shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Clint Eastwood returns as the "Man With No Name," this time teaming with two gunslingers to pursue a cache of $20,000-and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way.

MGM Home Entertainment / 1964 / 585 Minutes / Rated R
Street Date: June 01, 2010

Overall: I am one of those folks who has these westerns on VHS, DVD and yes now Blu ray. This is a classic western trilogy that's a must buy for those die hard western fans, it's Clint at his finest...it doesn't get any better than this. Ithink the Good, Bad & Ugly is by far the best in the series, the spaghetti western is alive in this 3 pack. The blu ray versions are the best yet, pristine conversions and awesome sound, a great add to any collection.

That's "This Week on Blu Ray".

War of the Worlds [Blu-ray] (2005)

An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. Also starring Tim Robbins, War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg, who had been planning the project for years, but set it aside until a wave of "alien invasion" films (led by Independence Day) had run its course.

Overall: War of the Worlds is a visually stunning and ultimately terrifying film about encounters with ruthless invaders. While I praise this film for the alien scenes and plot, the rest is so mundane and negative that it almost ruins the movie.
